
Vice Admiral David A. Dunaway, USN (Ret.), is a distinguished veteran with a 34-year career in the United States Navy, a respected board member, and a successful entrepreneur. Throughout his distinguished military career, he demonstrated exceptional leadership and technical acumen, resulting in significant contributions to the U.S. Navy and the broader defense community.
Born in El Paso, Texas, Vice Admiral Dunaway is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1982, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He furthered his education with a Master of Science in Aviation Systems Management from the University of Tennessee and a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School.
Vice Admiral Dunaway started his naval career as a graduate flight instructor, earning his wings in April 1984. He then completed flight training in the F/A-18 Hornet, followed by service with the “Vigilantes” of Strike Fighter Squadron 151 aboard the carrier USS Midway from 1986 to 1989. His excellence in service led to his selection for Class 96 at the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Maryland.
Throughout his career, Vice Admiral Dunaway held several key roles including operational FA-18 strike fighter pilot, Test Pilot, and Program Manager. His leadership roles included serving as Deputy Program Executive Officer, Commander of the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, Commander of the Operational Test and Evaluation Force, and the pinnacle of his career, Commander of the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). As the commander of NAVAIR, he managed over 4500 aircraft, 25+ type/model/series, a $40b annual budget, and 36,000 employees (about twice the seating capacity of Madison Square Garden).
After retiring from the Navy in October 2015, Vice Admiral Dunaway transitioned his focus to entrepreneurship, specifically identifying and investing in technologies with dual commercial and defense applications. As part of this endeavor, he founded Dunaway Integrated Solutions LLC and serves as an independent consultant.
Vice Admiral Dunaway brings considerable experience and strategic insight to several directors and advisory boards. His board memberships include Leonardo Electronic Systems, Entwistle and Tactical Air Support. He also serves on the Board of Advisors for Sarcos Robotics, Sierra Nevada Corporation and Neural Propulsion Systems.
In his latest role, Vice Admiral Dunaway brings his extensive leadership experience and strategic insight to Individual Centricity Corporation, serving as a Member of the Board of Directors. In this position, he contributes to guiding the company’s strategic direction and ensuring its commitment to delivering innovative solutions that put the individual at the center of digital transformation.
Vice Admiral Dunaway received many personal decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy, and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
